Proprietory software

The opposite to free and open source software is "proprietary" software. With proprietary software the original author keeps the copyright and usually does not distribute the source code.

A few proprietary software companies continue to oppose the whole notion of "free" software and actively lobby to influence the software purchase decisions of organisations and governmental bodies away from open source software.

Many other software companies, however, that used to provide only proprietary software are now moving towards mixed proprietary / open source products or to solely open source products.
