Open source hardwareSection: Manager's overview >> About Open Source Software
The idea of "open source" is not just limited to software systems: it is now spreading to include the designs of physical objects such as motor vehicles, cameras and numerous other advanced devices. Open source hardware - as it is known - is based around the release of all details of the design of the object including the schematics, BOM (Bill of Materials), circuit board layout, driver software, interfaces and instruction manuals. Releasing the design as open source means that many small teams of people around the world can co-operate on the development of a single project. This not only makes it easier for people in developing countries to manufacture but also increases the rate of improvement of design and development and lets the project draw on the combined wisdom of a worldwide community. Open source hardware is in its infancy at the moment, but looks set to grow - particularly in fields such as "eco-technology" and sustainable transport. |
