Debian

Debian is an extremely popular GNU/Linux distribution which has a strong community base. There are more than 25,000 packages available for Debian. There are plans to increase the number of kernels supported besides Linux to include GNU Hurd among others.

Debian GNU/Linux is managed by the Debian Project. This project group has strong principles with regard to software freedom, and - as a consequence - have developed the written Social Contract. Debian itself was created in 1993 by Ian Murdock; the name Debian coming from a combination of Ian's wife's name Debra and his own name.
